silence - how far can we go?

Hello everybody,

I am just wondering how far we (the composers) can go including very silent moments in our music in a time like this where is really no way to escape from the permanent accoustic polution?

I just finished a piece where marimba is only simulating to play to force the audience to absolute silence. Do we need any noisy audience which is really unable to keep still for just a second?

Nature is creating such a beautiful music but we are too loud to hear.

silence and slow motion in every aspect is the real quality of life.

So what do you think?

I can agree with the silence bit Andy but is there such a thing?

Do You remember Gustav Mahler in New York? Critical voices said the music was a bit too "forte" and was disturbing the conversation...

What I mean is absolute silence either by the orchestra AND the "almost" always annoying audience.

Think about Mahlers symphony No 9. The 4th movement will loose its spirit without 15 or 20 seconds silence after the last note...

Maybe I should do "Tekkno"... ;-)
