Seems to me that the future is that users will go for software which is the easiest to use and provides the results they desire or need. Whether that will be from open source software, or proprietary is beside the point. I used Score for years because it was a good program, served all of my needs. But it was klutzy, and after trying a few others, I chose Sibelius because it is easy to use and provides a very good quality output.

Charles, I think Richard has pointed to the reality of the discussion. People will use what works. Just because the source code may be available for freeware doesn't mean someone WILL address your issues though obviously they may. Is it despicable how companies abandon the products they've marketed and the people who use them? Probably. But we are not in Eden. Just about everything we do involves taking a chance. Sometimes it all works out though many times, it does not. So, if freeware meets the needs of a user, great. Arguing that the former Sibelius team should not start from scratch is meaningless, time consuming with no realizable purpose, and likely even a bit naive (too bad there is not more naivete though, maybe it would matter). All things change. And of course, the young man can certainly create his own product with the freeware code should he so desire. That would be a better solution than arguing the pros and cons of a for profit company's strategies.

Well, I guess as long as I keep my Win7 computer running I am on the sunny side. I do not need to upgrade to a new version if this is not available in the future any more. My experience tought me that everything depends on the hardware. As long as I can replace parts of my pc without going to a new OS everything is fine.

I am not a friend of Win8 being that I don't like to be forced being permanently connected to the internet. But I know that I could run Win7 for the next 20 years. When something works well why changing? I could freeze my system in the state of today, - no more updates, no new software, no other hardware and it would last for the 100 years.
The only thing I am worried about is reactivating soft after a crash.
What happens when companies stop supporting the activation-procedure for certain products?

Well, on the Sibelius-board you still can find users working with Sib 3 and 4.

Has anyone tested the notation-capability of cubase7, samplitude X, logic and friends. Those has done a quantum leap.
(man, was I longing for a post where I can use this word, - now that I have learned it )

There are also very good notationprograms beside Finale and Sibelius like notion, primus, capella, maestro, octava, forte, encore.... etc... Those guys are not sleeping

For now I give Boddy Lombardi a real chance. He said he is very interested in what we, the customers, say, want and need. I would be happy to pay for a new Sibelius which somehow is custom-made.

It is the first time that I have the true feeling people are listening to their users.
