1 - trio in three -
good use of rhymic impetus to create a piece that is really enjoyable and musically interesting as a listener and performer. I really liked this one and I think there were some really lovely touches with nice contrasts between movements. Would have liked to see some more string specific techniques - harmonics etc
2. the day of the end
clear bowings suggested, good use of pizzicate to create textural interest with an engaging contrast between movements. Good use of inner instruments perhaps think about introducing some accents in the viola part in the 2nd movement to really accentuate the twists and turns in the music here
3 V2 Autumn String Trio
very nice - Like the style of the first movment well thought out and structured and good understanding of writing for string trio throughout
4. 'autumn contest trio'
good contrast between movements with some lovely lyrical lines. Good use of dynamics and articulations again I would have liked to have seen more string specific techniques. be mindful that sometimes performers appreciate a change of clef as lots of ledger lines can be tricky to read.
5 Autumn Afternoon
good use of dynamics, nice to see the clear use of articulation guidance for performers to enhance phrasing. Try to increase use of tonal colours to widen expressive range
6 String Trio 7
nice flowing piece - perhaps needs a slightly faster tempo to fully show the flowing nature of the quavers, good use of inner parts, would like to have seen greater use of dynamic and tonal contrast
7 Trees anon
Nice musical flow nice contrast beween first and second movements - would like to see even more contrast though. think carefully about tempi, well thought out approach to articulation
String Trio Competition
The Day of the End (Mark 2)
I liked the solitary violin opening and the beautiful harmony of the first movement. The second movement’ The Chase’ had a fabulous cello riff and a glorious viola tune. A real sense of drama in the violin semiquaver passage at bar 69 and the menacing pizz in the cello at the end of the movement.
The yearning cello line, joined by the viola in octaves gave a haunted feeling.
A stoke of genius to end the movement with a cappella cello.
Soliloquy for String Trio (Mark 1)
A beautiful violin melody, underpinned with a delightful bass line and effective viola writing in the middle. Superb string writing here! A real sense of emotion here.
The second movement was a development of the material from the first movement, albeit in the minor key. Lovely use of diminished 7ths at bar 79 leading us back into the familiar surroundings of the recap. A sense of closure.
Autumn Contest (Mark 1)
I enjoyed the antiphonal style opening and closing movement . Exquisite harmony and beautiful string writing. The rhythmic simplicity of the second movement cello line and sustained lines of the violin and viola soaring above this, where quite lovely. Quite hypnotic and Nymanesque!
Trio in Three (Mark 3)
I enjoyed the dance-like character of the 1st movement with effective interplay between instruments. The chromatic harmony added colour and interest. Lovely triplet writing giving a feeling of fluidity in the second movement. The 3rd movement a little confused in style and structure.
An Autumn afternoon (mark 6)
I liked the programmatic nature of this composition and the effective use of trills in the viola and cello parts. Harmonic framework needed to be clearer in places. The 3rd movement was the strongest movement for me, especially from Letter E to the end where the interplay between instruments was super.
Trees Anon (Mark 5)
A delightful set of pieces. The Cherry Tree was my favourite movement, with a bright optimistic flavor. Lovely interplay between the 3 instruments.
Autumn Scenes in 3 (Mark 4)
I enjoyed the Classical idiom of the first movement and there was lovely interplay between the 3 instruments. Super development of material at Letter E.
The 2nd movement was the strongest movement for me and I loved the interplay between viola and cello.
Hi Kevin
Here is my decisions about the pieces you send me:
1. Trio in Three
High level of idiomatic string instruments writing. Using varied
articulation and Jazz harmony and groove, as well as tasteful humor.
2. The Day of End submission – using Recitative style, good
development of tension and drama which Enables every instrument to
express its full potential.
3. Trees Anon – A typical composition for strings, using well thought
out textures, but there is a sense of repeating familiar patterns.
4. An Autumn Afternoon – the second part is humoristic, showcasing
high ability of music writing and daring through the use of
interesting post-romantic harmony. Sometimes, however, the music is
too static.
5. Autumn String Trio – using excellent fugal composition technique,
but unfortunately nothing dramatic happens. The fugue should be a tool
for developing intensity, not restraint.
6. Automn contest – Using choral texture without developing drama and
without using significant harmony process.
7. String Trio No. 7 (Soliloquy) – influenced by romantic style for
movies. Using nice melodies without significant change in harmony. The
texture feels too busy at times.
Here is my ranking (best on top is no. 1):
1. Trio in Three
Strange title, sort of film music
9 of 10 points
2.Trio
Like no. 1, good for beginners
8 of 10.
3.The Day of the End
2nd mouvement: don't like the bars 56-75, on the other side beginning of mvt. 3 is good
title, hm...
7 of 10.
4. Soliloquy
sophisticated, also for amateurs
7 of 10.
5. An Autumn Afernoon
Too difficult for beginners but rich of ideas. Dissonance in bar 13 is disturbing
7 of 10.
6. Autmn scenes
There was only the 3rd mvt as mp3 enclosed. A bit like Haydn etc
6 of 10.
7. Trees
Sounds like trees with Eastern European roots. A bit distorted classics
6 of 10.
Pretty difficult to decide because a lot is pretty good.
Many thanks for your entries here are the figures (I hope!)
