New Christmas arrangements and another piece

Hi Kevin,

Please find attached a new piece for fl,ob,cl,bssn, vln 1 & 2, vla and vlc. It is called Ballade and is a semi-programmatic piece.

"Ballade is a short piece for mixed ensemble. It is programmatic in the sense that it has a slightly dreamy opening which leads to a pastoral section where the oboe leads with a rising and falling theme. At Poco più mosso the pace becomes more urgent as we continue the pastoral theme, running through fields, chasing small animals.

Then at letter C, the pace becomes more somnolent as the afternoon wears on. The artificial harmonics in the strings with their glassy brittle sound denote the bright midday sun. The winds are languid and drawn out as sleep draws a veil over the afternoon."

This is so well done that I can't say much except that I enjoyed it very much,in part because it does not require a massive orchestra.

I have one question about the notation. In the pizz, you indicate staccato, but it seems to me that pizz is intrinsically staccato, and the marking is therefore redundant.

As a once and former bass player I disagree that pizzicato is intrinsically staccato. Plucked notes can certainly be otherwise.  Joseph

Brass band players invariably play quasi pizz as stacc. It takes ages for me to retrain them to think of it differently. Jo is perfectly correct. On tubas quasi pizz is an equivalent to bell tones in some ways and it is a fabulous effect.

As to the staccato, I think that's just an error on my part I've either not put arco or I've accidentally copied the pizzes from somewhere else!. Well spotted Richard!

Comments about the Ballade

1. Bar 7/8 Is the F in the correct place on second violin. Should there be a crescendo on Violin 1?
2. Bar 16 the viola should have a starting dynamic as the last one was ff
3. Bar 20/21 does not look good on the score, very stretched out.
4. Bars 27/38 Love the overlapping dynamics on the strings!
5. Bar 44 no p needed on the viola.
Letter C maybe add a p sempre on the lower three string parts?
6. Bar 82 the ppp marks need to be lined up

please add lrksheet music as well.

I do have Dorico 3, but I haven't had time to read through the manual yet and I'm struggling gettiing my head around 'flows' (for one thing). Part of the problem for me is that everyone uses video tutorials these days and I'm afraid my brain just refuses to process the information. My eyes see movement and my brain says "Film!" so the info goes out the window and I just don't seem to learn anything. I need words. On paper. Preferably in B&W!

I've just taken the plunge and bought Dorico after giving it a good trial. I reckon it beats Sibelius in most departments and the idea of Flows is one of the most useful. It can simply be used to divide a piece into various movements or for instance you could use a flow for scrapbook ideas. There's a lot of clever thinking gone into the design and my main worry, namely limitations in playback, has surprisingly not come to pass, other than proper glissandi not yet being implmented. Despite no native Expression maps to date for third party libraries, it's far easier to create your own (or modify an existing Cubase one)than I could have imagined possible.

I may well have written my last score in Sibelius!

Well, could you please explain the idea to me, as I'm still not getting it. What is it and why would you use it? How does a flow relate to the written notes on a stave, to the score, to the parts?

the Dorico concept is that a "Project" which is most cases would equate to a single composition, can be divided into separate sections which would often correspond to movements. Suppose you wanted to write a string quartet and you knew it would have four movements, you could start by creating four Flows to correspond to them. This way you could easily switch to which movement you're working on but the great thing is that the music moves automatically and seamlessly from one flow to the next and you can decide the default pause between them for instance.

Basically, the flow simply divides up your work into manageable chunks which on playback run together. It has nothing to do with the notes in the score or parts per se. To actually write music, you use the "Write" module. It's in the "Setup" module where you make project-wide decisions such as the instruments to apply and number of flows.

By the way, I've not looked at a lot of videos myself, preferring a sort of question and answer sort of learning. But I'm sure they're useful for some people or when text simply fails to properly explain what's going on and you need to see it.
