First competition of the year

Right then here is the first comp. I used the information from the poll to find a publisher that would be interested in publishing work from a competition.

Here is the what the competition is about.

Compose a piece for any brass instrument/s. If it is a solo instrument then piano accompaniment is allowed. No other keyboard.(Apologies, you can use Organ as well!)
Any sized ensemble of brass and various percussion is okay as long as it is not a brass band as discussed in a previous thread.

Closing date is 28th February 2018

Scores to be posted to [e-mail]. Please send file as Sibelius, finale,MuseScore or xml.

If you have any questions please post them here and I will answer them.


The publisher is a small brass publisher that will pay 50% royalties.

Joe,

I will be creating a pdf for the publisher as I will have to add some details to the score for them. If you wish to send an mp3 you can do so.

The publisher will be adjudicating along with any members that wish to do so as we have done in the past.

As an extra when you send your score please do not add your name or any other details.

Kevin. Is there a duration limit to the piece, or can it be 1 minute or a 30 min, 6 movement symphony for brass type thing?

No duration. Bear in mind the bigger the ensemble the more difficult to get sales( I would imagine)

That is a shame as I think some of your brass writing warrants publication Joe.

Hi Kevin,

How many pieces can we submit? I started writing a 3-movement quintet and then realised I had made one movement a sextet. It's good enough as it is that I don't want to downsize it...

I'm not really a multi-tasker. But for some reason I'm on a roll. I hope it wears out soon, though, because it's wearing me out!

I'm a bit curious here Kevin. In the past with competitions, we always send in pdf's with no names etc. and the members then judge the result. The publisher then chooses what pieces they want to publish by getting in contact with the composer, agreeing contracts etc.

What are you adding to the pdf's that the composer will not see?

Why are you sending the publisher copies of the pieces when the pieces will be available for members to adjudicate on the forum. (I do believe the publisher is now a member).

Just curious about my non copyrighted piece being sent to a publisher with no details of who I am.

As you noted the publisher is now a member so I will not need to send them as they will be able to view. Therefore can all entrants send their music in any format to me on [e-mail] I will then sort them to be placed on the forum. If you send as a pdf please do not put your name anywhere on the score or mp3.

Have just submitted PDF and MP3 to your address [e-mail] but received a 'Mailer Daemon' note saying the address doesn't exist....however it (and a following test email) both show in my 'sent mail'....please confirm you've received them.
