Alternative summer competition free choice - where to vote

Before you click on the link and vote, please read the following

This is potentially a lengthy process, to listen to 17 pieces and vote for your top five, favourite being your first choice,

I would suggest that you take your time, it may take a few sittings to get through them all and give them all a fair chance.
Also there is space at the end to offer feedback on the pieces if you wish.

The feedback is optional. You can offer feedback on as many as you like. The feedback does not influence the result, only the votes do. I suggest to do the feedback on word first and then copy and paste it over when you are finally ready to do the survey.

No voting system is perfect, but i propose that each first place vote gets 7 points, second place 5 points, third place 3 points, second place 2 points, fifth place, one point. The winner will get the highest marks

Dear Adrian, I have to say, that I don't like very much competitions on art, to be sincere, also I think it's quite subjective to give votes, just because I think all music is marvelous. Also, I have no time now to compose for it, but I wonder if I can take my time and see the scores or listen to the music. Will be very pleaseant for me. Just I don't want to vote if you don't mind. But if you're agree I'll love to listen, just tell me how I can listen, or see the scores (the link or place).

Do not worry. You are not required to vote. It is a free choice to do so, or not to do so, and I have no doubt that everyone here will respect your personal opinion of the question of a competition.

Quick update

We have had 9 votes so far
| hope to close the voting on saturday 13 July

Do we all want full disclosure of the comments? ie. I publish all the comments here.
That is what we have done in previous competitions and nobody has objected.
If anybody has a problem with that, please let me know.

I am obviously privy to all these marks and comments coming in and I can tell you that any criticism has been totally constructive and most comments are very warm and encouraging.

We have had 14 votes.

However i know that at least two of these are from people who did not enter, so out of 17 entries, at least five entrants have not yet voted

So i will extend the deadline for one more week, next saturday 20 july.

tell me again, what's the point here?  Why are we bothering with this interaction if even the entrants are uninterested?  

and in the interest of full disclosure, though I'd stated privately I was more interested in hearing/seeing the entries and had no desire to participate as a voter, I reversed my position when I saw that seemingly not even the entrants cared enough about this 'competition' to cast votes, so, I did.  

Are we simply a community of the disinterested?  Come on SOS members (and non-members) take some time to listen this week and cast a ballot if for no other reason than to show there is a reason for this forum to continue.

It is a great pity, given the energy that Adrian and others have put into organising the competition, that the response to the voting has been disappointing.

The act of voting takes about 2 minutes. Granted there is a lot more time needed to listen to the pieces submitted. But we are musicians, so surely we are interested in hearing what our colleagues on the board have submitted , for our pleasure and judgement. And it is not as if one were expected to give a full adjudication. The simple act of voting suffices - although comments are obviously appreciated too, but are not de rigueur.

I do hope that there will be no need for further extension of the time limit as I am going on a choral holiday shortly and would love to have the results before I leave.

Perhaps I may be allowed to express my appreciation to Adrian and all others, including those who submitted works, for their work.

If you look at the small number of posts, and tiny number of replies, some correlation might be found. Activity on Northern Sounds has also been apathetic. Perhaps some way to attract new people, and younger people might liven things a bit.

I suspect that some of the drop out is because forums are no longer new, hence not interesting.

Some discussion on the lack of activity shoud be useful.

No, i wont extend it beyond next saturday; that really is the limit.
I should be able to tell everyone the results on the following day.

Richard, if we discount you knowing that your internet connection slow, one would have expected at least 16 votes.  As Adrian posted previously, "at least five entrants have not yet voted!"  I would think there would at least be enough interest amongst the entrants to vote.

You'll have noticed Kevin has re-purposed the Composer of the Month forum to be What I Am Listening To Now.  I hope this will be a short stop if not daily at least a couple of times a week for our members to check out music they may or may not be familiar with*.  It'd be great to see discourse open up but I guess folks are just too busy these days for some 'conversation'.  Too bad, I have learned much from the members here.

*Spotify is free in its basic form, I highly recommend it to all who have the band with to stream music.

Word (Microsoft) is an evil vile program that can be at times no better than a virus. There are plenty of other text editors out there the do just a good of job with out being a system hog that word is.

Hello Adrian,
                 Although I am an entrant, the reason that I cannot vote is that some of the files were "dot sib" which I was unable to listen to.  It's not that I am apathetic, it's just that it did not seem right to vote when I had not heard all the pieces and scanned the scores.
                 Having said that I must add that some of the music I heard was really really good...

Just a suggestion, you may choose to contact a composer directly via the PM function here to express your thoughts if something moved you . . .
