What is Selling/Print-out on SE?

I have had a couple of small sales since it's creation. A Little Suite for Clarinets (Riley) and Presto for Strings (Mozart).

Congratulations on your sales. I don't expect any sales of my scores. I had a few prints of most of my stuff when it was on SibMus and it was free, though.

The answer to your question is: what is selling and printing out on SE is exactly what was selling and printing out on SibMus.

How is it going for others? I have had about 2000 views but then I have quite a few scores.

Little more than 300 views for 14 scores. That would make between 21 and 22 views per score. I'm not doing very much in the way of active promotion, though. I'm content enough with my stats.

Well, for what it's worth (and I'm not at all sure what that is), 3200 views and 50 prints only since my scores are free.

That's why I hesitate to "value" such data: the top three or four in terms of views and prints are the least original, worthwhile and "good". I feel (in a very small way) like Richard Rodney Bennett after he wrote a few film scores to keep the wolf from the door - after that, no-one took him as seriously as a "proper" composer.

Have you thought of putting a minimum price on your best piece (as per the print count) and see if you get any returns?

Maybe RRB did not make it but I bet he ate well!

I already eat too well ..... and often .... and the wrong things.

Seriously though, if putting a price on something lessened the print count at all, I'd feel as if I had reduced my audience and, as the fee is of no importance to me, why risk it?

9 print outs so far (3 for one score, 2 for a couple more, and a couple singles) , 1400 views spread over a million scores, which works out to a predictable: the simple tunes for simple groups are occasionally getting printed, everything else gets a glance before moving on ;-)

As for Julian's respectable 50 print outs, I wouldn't bother charging either. The print outs will just stop (because people are cheap bastards) and, as you say, the money will not make your life better. Let whoever they are enjoy your music. I thought once too to charge for the pieces that actually get printed, but I just can't do it. I picture poor school children and their poorer instructors lamenting the loss of their free teaching aides, cursing the greedy composer... ;-)

I have had my first sale today! Not only the first one on Score Exchange, but my first sale ever (my music was free at Sibelius Music).

A mysterious gentleman or gentlewoman - obviously gifted with an impeccable taste - from GB (Gibraltar? Great Britain?) purchased a strange, ill-titled, orphaned miniature for violin and piano... That particular work never got a single printout when it was free and equally ill-titled "Stress in a stepped splined shaft", back in the Sibelius Music days...

Great. I just checked in after a long while and my prints are up too (but still double digits). That site is ok - seems to get more attention than the old site, but maybe that's just an illusion.

Not 100 of one piece, 100 from my complete oeuvre. And I won't say which is the most popular because it's embarrassing and not a little depressing given that this site at least is supposed to be for the musical cogniscenti (or as close as we can get to it).

Of course, five sales is so much harder to get than 100 freebies, so congrats Kevin on that.

3900 views; 17 free prints (15 of "Scarborough Fair", 2 of a couple of violin pieces); no sales of prints. I have never sold much on SibMus, and the free (and sold) prints have mostly been of easy arrangements of well-known music, so I didn't expect that to change when I moved my scores to ScoX.

Still good that people are interested Maria. As I told Julian why don't you put a nominal amount on a score and see what happens. You can always remove it if the print amount drops.

That is what I have done... I started with nearly all scores free to print, then put price tags on most of my best scores, but when I noticed that other arrangements of the same piece (among the "most viewed/sold/printed") were cheaper and that they later were changed to free, I also changed back to free prints on those scores.

Fair point. I noticed in the early days that when my scores were free I used to get a few prints. It is good that people view the music and that some are prepared to part with some cash as well.
